Recapping SuperPile 2016
SuperPile is a conference hosted by the Deep Foundations Institute (www.dfi.org). According to their website, nine of DFI’s technical committees combine their resources to put on this annual show. SuperPile travels every year to a different city and this year it visited Chicago, IL, the home of one of Atlas Pipe Piles Manufacturing Facilities.
This year’s conference kicked off on Tuesday, June 7th with a mill tour of Atlas Tube. More than 30 professionals in the deep foundations industry attended to learn how Straight Seam ERW Pipe Piles are manufactured. Before the tour began, Marvin Phillips, Corporate Metallurgist with Atlas Tube, presented on how piles were made in a classroom setting. Following the presentation, mill operators took small groups of 10 out on the floor to witness the manufacturing process. Individuals marveled at the efficient production of piling commenting on how fast the mill would run high quality material.
For the next two days of the conference (June 8th & 9th), the show moved to the Westin Hotel on Michigan Ave. This year’s conference focused on piling design and construction with multiple presentations presented by various leaders in the Deep Foundations Industry. Between presentations, there were opportunities for networking and visiting with suppliers in the exhibit hall. For those who missed our tour on the 7th, Atlas Pipe Piles was available to answer questions for the more than 100 attendees at our showcase booth.
A popular question at the show was the manufacturing of A500 and A252 products and what benefits users of A252 spec received as a result. At Atlas Pipe Piles,
we produce our piling to the more stringent A500 dimensional tolerances; by doing this, it gives our customers a product that is ready to drive as soon as it is delivered.
