NASCC Wrap-Up

on April 25, 2012

The 2012 NASCC conference was a big success! Judging by the well-attended breakout sessions and the flurry of activity at our booth, it seems Atlas’s new Jumbo HSS product is gaining the interest of engineers and building owners. Thanks to everyone who stopped by — it was great to see familiar faces and meet new friends!

This year, the AISC did an outstanding job bringing in leading experts to share their insights on designing with HSS. Professor Jeffrey Packer offered a “Weld Design for Rectangular HSS” seminar, highlighting the results of a study on effective weld lengths in rectangular HSS T-connections subject to branch in-plane bending, and overlapped K-connections under predominantly branch axial loading. Additionally, Carol Drucker (Drucker Zajdel Structural Engineers Inc.) participated in a moderated session entitled, “Mythbusters: The Connection Edition,” where she discussed and dispelled myths related to connections, including HSS.

Along with Nippon NSMP, I presented an educational session on the availability and applications of Jumbo HSS. We discussed the key benefits of HSS and the application for Jumbo HSS in rigid frames in seismic zones. Of particular interest to the audience were overall cost reductions achieved by using HSS, as well as the types of connections (and their detailing and fabrication) used in rigid frames in Japan.

If you would like a copy of our presentation or have any questions about the use of Jumbo HSS, call me at 312.275.1664 or email me at Bradlee.Fletcher@atlastube.com. You can also view our new HSS video we featured at our booth. As a reminder, our Jumbo HSS are available in 18”, 20” and 22” squares, up to 0.875” wall thickness.
