Designing with HSS: Moment Connections 101
Designing with HSS can be a complex concept for the most experienced engineer or fabricator. In fact, it’s likely that you have experienced some confusion while designing with HSS and the connections needed to maintain their structural integrity.

- Moment connections are used with rigid frames to resist lateral loads, such as wind or seismic loads.
- Fully restrained connections maintain the defined angles between connected members at strength limit states.
- Moment connections develop continuity and rigidity between a beam and a column.
- Square HSS columns are ideal for use in moment frames subject to bi-axial loads.
- Rigid frames provide clean columns and wide-open efficient spaces.
